The original Sonic Trilogy has been at the forefront of favorite Sonic games as well as favorite video games lists. This title has been number one around just as many times as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and introduced the concept of Sega Genesis downloadable content. Before this, the only other attachment we had was Game Genie. Putting a second cartridge into your system for extra content for the game was beyond strange and unique.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 officially took on a shining quality among an already stellar series. It was the first appearance of Knuckles and an introduction of new game mechanics that increased gameplay complexity and replay value. You could now glide in the air and climb up walls to find new secret areas in the levels. It does this while also retaining its same fast paced gameplay we knew and loved from the second game.
This story is a rather large milestone in the Sonic canon, as it is not only Knuckle’s first appearance, but also the Master Emerald with which the plot revolves. Not only has these two been added, but now there are brand new power ups as well as some amazingly updated graphics.
The game is amazing by itself, but there is an added extra to having the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge. Not only does it attach to Sonic 3, but it also attaches to both of the other installments in the series. This will add Knuckles to the game while not really changing much else about the game itself. So, on top of giving Sonic 3 a good deal of extra material, it adds replayability to the others in the trilogy.
If this is not enough to convince you to give this game a try then we must call your love of Sonic into question. Our favorite characters are in top form and the level design on top of improved gameplay from the masterpiece that was Sonic 2 makes this a staple to any Sega game collection. With challenging platforming and tons of endearing qualities throughout the brilliantly designed levels, you arguably can’t do much else than give this a perfect score.
